ABOUT lAURA STOKES
Contemporary Artist
Laura Stokes is a contemporary artist whose practice centers on abstraction as a way of engaging with structure, movement, and the social questions of her time. Trained originally as an architectural engineer, her visual work reflects a sustained interest in composition, spatial relationships, and the balance between control and intuition.
Laura’s artistic formation includes college-level study in visual art and art history, as well as private study with established artists, including John Smith, Juan Rodriguez, and Jim Abuan. After developing strong foundations in figurative and representational work, she shifted her focus toward neo-abstraction, where her current body of work resides.
Her work is informed by both contemporary and historical influences, drawing inspiration from artists such as Julie Mehretu, Kerry James Marshall, Yayoi Kusama, and Ai Weiwei, as well as 20th-century figures including Frank Stella and Helen Frankenthaler. She remains actively engaged with current art discourse through ongoing study of exhibitions, publications, and art fairs.
Since 2012, Laura has exhibited her work throughout the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and California, including group and solo exhibitions in galleries and public venues. In parallel with her studio practice, she has conceived and managed exhibitions, installations, and collaborative projects addressing social issues, including immigration and community identity.
